Modelling From Cradle to Grave

When you think of a "model" what immediately springs in your thoughts? The girl with the flawless skin on the front cover of a glossy magazine, or just a skinny size zero waif strutting the catwalk of fashion Week, or hunk with a six-pack advertising one expensive aftershave or any other. These are certainly all accurate perceptions yet they only represent a minute percentage of models plying their trade.

The fact is, anyone can become a model for free, whether they are one or one hundred years old. Get any newspaper, magazine, or flyer and you are bombarded with advertising, whether it be for napkins or baby food through school wear and holidays to furniture, electrical goods, mortgages and retailers. Do not forget over 50's insurance and holidays, stair lifts, and chairs that tip up electronically, the list is endless. What exactly do all these advertisements have in common? They all feature models, people who have been paid to acquire their photograph taken.

You will find that the majority of these models are ordinary looking folk, in fact you might think they are nothing special and also you could do that, well you could be right. They're trying to make their items appealing to the mass market, a market which is inhabited by short people, tall people, fat or thin people, not the gods or goddesses of Vogue or GQ.

It is true that the international supermodels are making top dollar and jet setting from Milan to London and New York, but make no mistake; the earnings can still be very lucrative for the more daily work. A model in the UK should realistically expect to earn between £200 to £1,000 for a day's shoot, plus expenses. There's also the opportunity to travel, as much ads are shot on location, and also for this you would be paid for so many days including travel time, plus your entire hotels meals etcetera.
